St. Baldrick's 'shaving' the way for good cause

courtesy Students from Crestmont Elementary wear their green hats in honor of the St. Baldrick's Celebration, scheduled Saturday in Roseville. Participants will shave their heads to raise funds for childhood cancer research. The event is part of a national campaign that started several years ago in New York City.

It doesn't matter who you are or how fashion-conscious you aren't. Just know, this weekend, bald is the new black.

Hundreds of people in all age groups will gather beginning at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Roseville Sports Center, 1545 Pleasant Grove Blvd., Rose-ville, to participate in the annual St. Baldrick's Cele-bration.

In addition to returning teams - such as The Roseville Fuzz, members of the Roseville Police Department - newcomers, including students from Crestmont Elementary who are on board to lose their locks for a good cause, will gladly shave their heads in an effort to raise money to benefit cancer research.

The St. Baldrick's Celebration was the brainchild of a group of New York City business executives, who pulled off the first event in 2000. Rather than spend another year with a traditional celebration of St. Patrick's Day, the group decided to help young children diagnosed with cancer.

Because treatment for children with cancer often causes their hair to fall out, the executives recruited volunteers to have their heads shaved in public in return for financial support. The first event, which had a goal of "$17,000 on the 17th," has grown to a nationwide event that has raised more than $7 million to fund cancer research.

Robyn Raphael is the founder of The Keaton Raphael Memorial, which helps fund cancer research, particularly for children. The organization is the sponsor of the local St. Baldrick's Celebration. Raphael noted everyone involved in the annual event has a story about their battle or the battle of a loved one against cancer.

Those interested in participating in the event, but not ready to shave their heads, can still come and be a part of the action by donating to one of the more than 20 teams scheduled to take part Saturday.

Donations can also be made through the Web site http://www.stbaldricks.org/. Search under team names, or search event locations for the Roseville Sports Center.

Donations can be made using a credit or debit card, or a donation form can be printed and mailed in to the addresses provided. Donations will also be collected the night of the event.
